The Immigration Act of 1924

tud

Event Description:

  • Only a certain amount of immigrants were allowed into the United States each year.
  • The quota was determined by taking the U.S. population of 1890, and giving each country a quota equal to 2 percent of its nationals living in the United States at that time.
  • The act reduced the number of immigrants in America setting an annual maximum of 150,000
  • Immigrants from the Western Hemisphere, including Canada and Mexico, were exempt from the quotas.
  • The intent was to limit the amount of New Immigration from central, eastern, and southern Europe
  • Over 20,000 per year from southern, central, and eastern Europe and a few other places outside northern and western Europe
  • Between 1881 and 1920 a wave of immigration brought more than 23 million new arrivals to the United States.
  • They were largely from eastern and southern Europe. But not all of them planned to stay.

Our topic fits under Intolerance because the are being intolerant to the immigrants in the united states.
